My Thoughts on Plot Armor

Hello to all!

As someone who is an avid fan of anime and manga, and someone who writes a lot of anime-like stories, one thing that I’ve seen time and time again is plot armor.

For those of you who don’t know, plot armor is any scenario where the odds are completely stacked against the main character, and even though things seem completely hopeless, the main character always prevails for no other reason other than because the plot or story needs them to succeed or live.

A lot of people, particularly those who review and analyze anime as a job, will say that plot armor ruins anime. However, I don’t think that is always the case.

If used too often, plot armor can become a hindrance to building up a story, but depending how it is used, and what characters are affected most by it, plot armor, like any other story-telling device, can actually make a story better.

There are a lot of examples of how plot armor is used and the affects it has on a story, but there are far more than I have time to write about here.

If you’d like a more in depth look at what I mean, check out this video by The Anime Man, one of my favorite anime-youtubers.

What do you think? Does plot armor ruin a story, or does it depends how it’s used? Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time, stay awesome!
